Joe Kort

At the heart of Joe Kort’s practice is a conviction that understanding your full self — sexual, relational, emotional — is the foundation of genuine change. Kort, a Licensed Social Worker based in Royal Oak, Michigan, works with individuals, couples, and groups navigating some of the most complex terrain a person can face: out-of-control sexual behavior, mixed-orientation marriages, infidelity, childhood sexual abuse, chemical dependency, and the particular experiences of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

A central method in his work is Imago Relationship Therapy, drawn from Harville Hendrix’s framework, which uses structured communication exercises to help couples deepen connection and singles build genuine relationship skills. For people whose attention is fractured — pulled constantly between devices, notifications, and an overstimulated nervous system — these exercises offer a concrete practice for returning to a real conversation with a real person. Kort offers this work through individual counseling, couples intensives of four to eight hours, and ongoing group therapy, including a gay men’s group and a men’s sexuality group for straight, bi, and gay men.
