Thomas Marchevsky

Listening for the structure beneath the problem

About Me

Dr. Thomas Marchevsky works from the conviction that lasting change comes not from managing symptoms but from reaching the structure underneath them. A licensed psychologist and Lacanian psychoanalyst based in San Francisco, he brings a rigorously depth-oriented sensibility to clinical work — one shaped equally by his scholarly background and by more than two decades of Tibetan Buddhist meditation practice, which informs how he listens and how he holds what is difficult in the room.

His practice spans a wide range of concerns: adults and young people navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse, addiction, and the compulsive patterns that have found new expression in behaviors like compulsive gaming or the relentless pull of a scroll — the same reward loops, differently housed. He works with individuals, couples, and families, and brings particular experience to crisis situations and to problems that have resisted easier approaches.

Dr. Marchevsky serves as Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Psychoanalysis and has published extensively, including a book with Routledge on psychoanalysis and contemporary society. He offers confidential online sessions to clients throughout California for those drawn to careful, unhurried work oriented toward what lies beneath the surface.
