At the center of Alexa Tennyson’s practice is a straightforward conviction: therapy works when the relationship works. She builds that relationship deliberately — staying open to feedback, inviting honest conversation about what’s helping and what isn’t, and adjusting her approach alongside each client. She describes her style as warm, collaborative, and active, meaning sessions aren’t passive. Clients can expect to genuinely feel and examine their emotions, not just talk around them.
Alexa works with individuals, couples, and families navigating anxiety, depression, relationship strain, life transitions, and identity questions — including the everyday friction of a household where a teenager’s inner life plays out as much on a screen as at the dinner table. She draws on attachment theory, family systems thinking, and a social justice lens to trace how upbringing, community, and cultural expectations shape the patterns people bring into therapy. Her work is also strengths-based: before mapping what needs to change, she helps clients see what’s already working.
She holds advanced training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) and is completing formal EFT certification. Alexa earned her M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota and her B.A. from St. Olaf College. She sees clients in Minneapolis and offers online sessions.
